Maple stretcher-base table with 2-board pine top

From a Vermont collection, this sturdy maple and pine table was probably made in the late 18th century. Its base is maple, with pegged mortise-and-tenon joints, and traces of red wash. Its top consists of two wide boards, joined by two period cleats running from one long side to the other. These cleats have been reinforced by three additional braces, at the center and near each end. We believe that the top may have been replaced in the period.
