Exceptional Georgian oak settle

We've never owned an English settle we've found more attractive than this one. Its subtly curved upper rail supports four tombstone panels, and its sturdy base is supported in the front by understated pad feet. Like the crest rail, the two arms curve gracefully.

Each of the four panels is chamfered and the raised center section thus created is framed with an inlaid band. All joints are pegged and tight. The original seat (probably webbing and upholstery) has been updated with a plywood panel, solidifying any potential movement. The flame-stitch upholstered cushion is comfortable and in good condition.

From a treasured family collection. English, c. 1735.
