Roman High-Back Chair

An imposing Italian armchair, with canted back and stable shoe feet. Each of its rear posts terminates in an acanthus-carved finial, while its arms are subtly and attractively shaped. It is covered in worn 17th century tapestry fragments, though this may not be its original upholstery. One of its shoe feet has been restored.

A similar chair is pictured in Lester Margon's Masterpieces of European Furniture, 1300 - 1840 (pp. 108-9). Margon's example is called "A Roman High Back Chair 1620". It is in the collection of the Schlossmuseum in Berlin.
