A fine example of the characteristic form of the period, this coffer is joined on its face, sides, back, and lid. The face is the most complex, with three carved panels framed in a carved frieze, a moulded lower rail, and moulded legs. Two beautifully carved stiles frame the center panel. The sides have the same form, except the center stile is moulded, not carved. Atypically, the lid contains four panels, rather than three, but – typically – the elements of the frame are moulded, rather than carved. The three-panel back is joined more plainly.

Two of the rear panels have suffered from minor decay, and small patches have been applied to the exterior. The rear feet have been tipped.

English, ca. 1680
