Good eating

The Pioneer Valley of Massachusetts, where we live, is home to several first-rate restaurants. For those of you considering a visit, we'll try to add one to this listing every so often. One of the finest is Sienna, located in South Deerfield. It offers an imaginative, impeccably prepared menu, and outstanding service. It's probably too pricey for a casual meal, but for a culinary treat, it's a bargain.

Also within 10 miles of our shop is The Blue Heron, an award winning bistro, featuring "spicy all-World cuisine." Featured in the September, 2006 issue of Bon Appétit, The Blue Heron is located in the refurbished Sunderland Town Hall.

There's a new restaurant in Northampton, The Sierra Grille, featuring an exceptionally varied menu, served in warm, inviting surroundings, and complemented by several fine Belgian, American, and European beers and an outstanding cellar. Their mussels and fries are as good as any we've ever had in the Low Countries, and their prices are startlingly low. A great place to relax and indulge your palate.

There are many fine restaurants in and around Rhinebeck. Our favorite is Cafe Tamayo in Saugerties, a world-class restaurant in a small town. It's located across the river and a few miles north (about 20 minutes from the fairgrounds), but well worth the trip.

We recently had a world-class dinner at the Culinary Institute of America in Hyde Park, New York. The food is outstanding, and the service is impeccable. Reserve months in advance, or be disappointed.

Antiques supplies

Need reproductions of period brass or iron hardware to restore the appearance of an antique? Horton Brasses, in Cromwell, CT offers quality pulls, escutcheons, hinges, nails, and other essentials. Their service is exceptional, and they're a pleasure to deal with.

Looking for a better way to polish your brass candlesticks or silver trays? A dealer friend recommended Met-all polishes, and we've found them very effective. We buy ours over the web from William A. Kilian in Philadelphia for about $10.00 a can.
