Pair of wrought iron knifeblade andirons

Rising from two pair of well-formed penny feet, the hammered knife blades spring from a simply-shaped medallion and terminate in a pair of seamed brass finials. As is to be expected, the dogs are attached to the medallion with a tenon, hammered flush with the face. The curves of the knife blades and the gleam of the finial add a touch of refinement to this simple form. American, ca. 1790. Height: 20"; depth: 17 ½".
