Although these two candlesticks have differences in color and formal details, they came to us together from the estate of a passionate collector, and we’ve decided to keep them together for several reasons.

First, the form of the candle sockets suggests that they were produced in the same foundry. Second, each has a medial knop on its shaft and a recessed drip pan in its octagonal base. Third, the difference in color of the two may simply be the result of the somewhat haphazard way (a shovelful of this, a shovelful of that) that metals were mixed at the time.

We’ve never seen the form before, but an internet search suggests that they may be French, and certainly from the late 1600’s.
