A small, gilt oval snuff box

A little gem, with engine-turned engraving on its sides and lid. Unlike Dutch brass tobacco boxes of this period, it has the warm color of gold, with a silver oval framed in its lid. No maker’s mark, but from the period of Louis XVI (1774 – 92).

French, probably Paris, late 18th century.
