For those who prefer plain surfaces to elaborately carved ones, this coffer offers the beauty of ancient oak and the details of a well-crafted frame adorned only with moulded details around the panels. Both the face and the back were made with three vertical panels, while each end was constructed with a single, near-square panel. The lid was made with two oak boards, splined together and hinged with iron straps. There is a small till inside and a very early iron escutcheon masking the keyhole. On the upper back rail is stamped “W : DAMANT”, perhaps the original owner, or the maker.
English, ca. 1690
